Who is Sandy Brand? |
|
I'm a Scot and a Canadian, who's proud
to call Canada home. I'm a painter and
printmaker with degrees and diplomas in
art, psychology, business, music and
Montessori teaching. A creator, a lover
of life, a mother, a friend. I've been
making a living making art for over 30
years. My prints and big paintings are
in private and corporate collections,
movies, ads and in your homes - what
more could I ask? (If you don't have
"Sandy Brand" of your own yet check out
my Gallery!) My students think I may be
contagious. Their creativity is leading
them to become ecstatic over things
like a neat crack in the side-walk, or
a space between branches in a tree ....
I'm glad. Call me for an appointment.

I've been asked to write a short "artist's statement":
I express my emotions, my spirituality and my ever-changing
autobiography through my work. In sharing some of it with you I
become vulnerable, but human and "right-sized". I'd like my
work to touch your soul and energise your love of life.

I'm planning another amazing trip to Scotland for May 2011. Just to get you dreaming ... how about a day or two in Glasgow, with it's amazing old buildings - the Cathedral, the
University, The Art Gallery, Statues, Rene McIntosh inspired
buildings etc. Then take the train up by Loch Lomond and the ferry over to the island of Mull, (with really fresh fish and big Scottish "chips" - or black pudding, or haggis!) In Mull we can enjoy a little steam train ride, Duart Castle, Tobermory Scotch whisky distillery, the Isle of Mull Brewery, and an arts centre - or just the rocks, birds and peace ... (It's not far from Oban on the mainland). From Mull we can visit Iona easily, and do rubbings, collage, draw and paint. In Iona we can feel the ghosts of all the Kings who have been buried near the monastery and ruins, and walked the white sands gazing at the turquoise sea! It is also a jumping off point for many other nearby Islands. We can paint the big rolling hills of heather and yellow gorse. Everything's so close together in Scotland too - it's just a "wee" island! I would love to have you with us, so please get in touch if you might able to come, and I'll keep you posted!

Unfortunately many of the galleries I've known and loved for a while are changing. Fran Willis has closed her gallery in Victoria, but will still not be leaving the art scene completely. Shayna Laing in Montreal has also closed her Gallery doors, though is still working away quietlty and can still be reached at the same number and IS still selling art! I must admit that I'm not working quite as hard as I used to either. Perhaps we've earned taking it a bit easier after all these years. I can't see myself ever not painting though!

The Art Rental & Sales shop at Burlington Cultural Centre has lots of my work, and although we have lost Chris at Museum London they still seem to be doing well with my work! Come on out and have a look!

I'll be leading art workshops in Barrie again soon which I'm looking forward to. And recently I've had the priviledge of leading several artmaking workshop with grade 2 and 3 students in northern Etobicoke. It's been tremendous!! We were creating papier mache sculptures, drawings, paintings and collaged art! Young people do SO well. I'm always just blown away by children and their art. Their energy and playfulness is contagious.
|
|
I've also been at another Arts Discovery program, organized by Arts Etobicoke, for a bunch of Grade 4 students! I feel so blessed by all the wonderful folks I am able to
help make art. I really enjoy showing them how to unearth all
that creativity inside them! Watching them grow is such an exciting process. I think I learn as much from them as they do from me!
